On 21st September, the Island of Lismore and its Comann Eachdraidh were
honoured by the holding of the AGM of Comunn na Gàidhlig in the Public Hall.
This is the chairperson's (Mairi Bremner) last year of office and the Chief
Executive, Donald Martin, is also retiring within a year. The Comunn has had
a busy and successful year between youth outreach, involving MSPs and
co-operation with organisations for other Celtic languages.
Peadar Morgan, Language Planning Manager of Bòrd na Gàidhlig gave a
presentation of the Draft National Plan for Gaelic, which went out for
public consultation on 14th August last until 10th November 2006.
In response to a question from the floor, it was explained that the
difference between Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig and An Comunn
Gaidhealach is that the Board is only concerned with planning and Comunn
na
Gàidhlig (which was founded in 1984) continues its traditional executive
function of promoting Gaelic with funds and expertise and it is An Comunn
Gaidhealach which runs the National Mòd.
The proceedings were all in Gaelic, but due to a gallant first attempt by
two members, a simultaneous translation was provided into the newer
tongue.
