History

One of the earliest artefacts found on Lismore is a polished stone age axe found at Balnagowan, thought to be Neolithic (before 2000BC). There are numerous bronze age burial cairns (cairn = man-made mound of stones) along the ridges all over the island, most numerous in the southern half of the island. The biggest of the cairns - Cnoc Aingeal (fire hill) stands about 20 feet high and has a diameter of about 40 feet. Many of the other cairns have been robbed of most of their stone to build houses and field walls at a later date.

Lismore is part of the parish of Lismore and Appin, in the past this parish also included Kingairloch in Morvern.
