I too would like more information and to whom my Great Grandmother was Connected to on the Isle of Lismore where she was born there abt 1825 My sister Jean Campbell signed this guest book in 2008. Quite neat that I ran across her entry as well. Information on my Great grandfather is still a mystery, very elusive.

The first of my family to come to Bute was John McLachlan and his wife Ann Campbell. John came from Lismore and was born abt 1821 in Port Kilkerran. His occupation was limestone worker/causewayer.His death certificate has his father as Hugh McLachlan, though an earlier application for poor relief has his parents as Lachlan McLachlan and Mary McDonald. Does anyone have record of McLachlans in this part of Lismore?

I've just been reading Donald Black's truly excellent book "A tale Or Two From Lismore" and find it great reading. As I've been researching my Lismore family ancestors for a few years now, I find the stories very interesting, and I'm being able to paint a bigger picture of their lives and habits on the Island. Altho' very informative, I find myself craving for more information on some of the islanders mentioned. As an example, there's a chapter on Lachlan MacDonald...can anyone verify that Lachlan was the son of Hugh Macdonald and Ann McCaig? There are other small questions that I would love answered so, if someone would be good enough to give me contact details of Donald, or tell him of my post, I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Regards,Jim. jmsw06733@blueyonder.co.uk

Hi,
I just found out that a grandmother is from Lismore. She was christened there in June 1791. Her parents were David McEwan and Harriot Nimmo or Nimms. I'm hoping that someone recognizes the unusual names or can give me some idea of what their lives in that time period.
Thanks Jacquie

My husband is related to a Solomon McColl and a Catherine McInnes. They had a son Duncan who married Dorothy McColl and they had two daughters Agnes and Christie. Christie was born at Achbhlar but I cant find it on any old maps. Dorothy and Duncan died at 105 High Street Glasgow about 1861. He was a policeman. Hope it is your family.

I have a copy of a 1861 Census that Mary Campbell(my great gandmother) was born in Lismore, Argyllshire about 1825. Her address was Killeane and she was a farmer of 13 acres. How would I obtain more information on her? Love your site and had the pleasure of visiting Lismore in 1998. We visited your museum and I met Deidre Campbell who has the same thumbs as me, Take care, Jean

As a visitor to Lismore it would be great to read a synopsis of the history in easy to read English. But I love the island - it is absolutely just right and I hope the future balance of the island stays as the perfect mix it
seems to be today.

Clan Livingstone/MacLea has been working very hard on a DNA project to figure out just who is and who isn't a Livingstone from Lismore and vicinity.
This project is also helping us to understand just how we might be genetically
related to other clans such as the Carmichaels, the Campbells the Blacks, etc.
If you or anyone in your family has an interest in learning more about this
project, go to our DNA website at www.familytreedna.com/public/livingston_maclea_dna
or visit our Clan Livingstone website at http://www.clanmclea.co.uk/SiteMap.htm

Spent last week staying in Port Appin and visited Lismore for a couple
of days, one of which by bike so I got to see a lot of it. It's a fantastic
place with wonderfully friendly people. Good luck with the Heritage Centre. Do
you happen to have contact details for the Contractor working on the scheme? I
spoke to one of them while I was there and would be interested in getting in

I am glad to see a Lismore site. I am researching the McColls. My gg
grandmother Ann McColl (c.1820-1915)married Donald McPhail (1811-1895) around
1843. They emigrated to Elgin County, Ontario Canada about 1884 with grown
children. I believe Ann's parents were Alexander McColl and Mary McCallum who
may have emigrated to Ontario even prior to 1884. Campbell seems to be a common
middle name in this family.

Hi
I don't know whether anyone can help me or not, Jane Muirhead recommended your
site to me.
I am tracing my ancestors and have managed to get back to 1757. My ancestor
Samuel McColl who was the son of Hugh McColl and born on Lismore married a Janet
Campbell and they had 14 children. Samuel became the schoolmaster on Lismore,
also the postmaster and also the clerk to the kirk session. His gravestone
stands in Lismore graveyard. As far as I know the children's names were (some names are repeated so obviously the first children born of that name died) JOHN, HUGH, ANGUS, EUPHEMIA, LILLY, ANNE, DONALD, MAGDALENE, ALEXANDER, DONALD, JOHN, MARY, ALEXANDER.
I know that Anne died in 1891 in Taynlochan on 11.09.1891. Hugh McColl was a
tenant farmer in Kenlochlaich. If anyone has any info on this family could they
please get in touch. I am hoping to visit Lismore in a couple of weeks and look
forward to it.
