News January 2008

There are changes afoot at Ionad Naomh Moluag, with the two-year Museum Development Officer’s post coming to an end on the 1st of February 2008.

Three people have held this title in its short life: Cait McCullagh for the first seven months, and then Jennifer Baker and I have shared the job for much of the remaining time.

The past three years have been a succession of sighs of relief – getting the site, achieving the funding, finding the staff, completing the building, and opening to the public.

However, by their very nature museums are never complete, and far from sighing with relief that everything seems to have gone to plan, we are now making sure that the museum grows onwards and upwards into the future.

Six new volunteers will take the work that we have started forward, supported by the faithful CELM committee. They bring a range of skill and much enthusiasm, and will ensure that the collection and archive continue to meet correct museum standards, and that the new technology is kept up to date and in good trim.

There is a Who’s Who at CELM on this website – and it’s worth a look, as it will also show just how differently things now have to be run with the complications of a café and shop. CELM has three distinct responsibilities: safeguarding and researching heritage (their original aim), trading (to keep it all afloat), and curating (the daily nuts and bolts).

You will see that a good range of steady hands remain on the tiller, not least Tony Perkins, who remains in post as Project Manager until May 2008.

It has been great fun and a real privilege to been involved with the transition of the Comann Eachdraidh Lios Mòr’s museum from the schoolhouse to the wonderful Ionad Naomh Moluag. I am looking forward to watching it settle and grow in the years to come.
